How this is measured

  1. Source. Advertised stock on Australian dealer websites, monitored continuously; withdrawals are picked up each time our dealer load runs, about every second night, and dated that day. A withdrawal is counted as a sale unless the same car is seen advertised again (a relist, or a move between dealers). Dealer listings only, including fixed-price Buy Now listings from auction houses; no private sellers or auction lots.
  2. Every dealer we monitor. 6,828 rooftops across the dealers with sales in August to October 2026. Every figure, a month-on-month change included, is counted on all the dealers we monitor in that month, so a month with more dealers in it shows more sales; the number of dealers with sales in each month is shown beside the month-on-month counts. A rooftop is one franchise at one site.
  3. New, Demo and Used. Every table shows the total, then the cars sold as New, Demo and Used. On a build of the month's year or the year before, New is under 1,000 km or with no odometer reading, and Demo is under 5,000 km. Used is everything else. A type with fewer than 10 sales shows too few.
  4. New-car counts cover the stock dealers advertise on their own websites. Toyota dealers list new stock on Toyota-run pages that this edition does not include, so Toyota's New figures are understated.
  5. Sample, not census. These are observed sales at monitored dealers, not registrations. Shares are of observed sales.
  6. Price movement is like for like by car. Cohorts match on make, model, build year and odometer band, so each move compares the same kinds of car in both months, and need at least 8 sales in each month. A cohort’s cars are a month older each month, which accounts for part of any fall.
  7. Price cuts compare the first price we saw advertised with the price the listing carried when it was withdrawn. We see advertised prices, never sale prices, so a car is reported as having had its advertised price cut before it sold. Sales with no recorded first price are excluded.
  8. Days to sell count from the dealer's listing date where the website shows one, otherwise from when we first saw the car; a car whose start date is unknown is left out of days figures. Days run to when the car was withdrawn, for cars sold in the month. Figures are medians. From 14 October, days to sell count from the dealer's listing date where the website shows one; earlier sales count from when we first saw the car, which runs shorter.
  9. States are the state the car was advertised in. The ACT is included in New South Wales, because about a third of the cars filed as ACT were at NSW yards. Each state uses the national tables and thresholds, so thin states show more gaps; a gap means too few sales, not zero.
  10. Prices are advertised prices at the point the listing was withdrawn, not settled transaction prices, and are not adjusted for on-road costs.
