How this is measured

  1. Source. Advertised stock on Australian dealer websites, monitored continuously; withdrawals are picked up each time our dealer load runs, about every second night, and dated that day. A withdrawal is counted as a sale unless the same car is seen advertised again (a relist, or a move between dealers), which removes about one in nine withdrawals. A car sold to auction or wholesale, or moved to a dealer we do not monitor, can still be counted as a sale. Dealer listings only, including fixed-price Buy Now listings from auction houses; no private sellers or auction lots.
  2. Reporting universe. 3,192 rooftops at dealers whose sold reporting is continuous across July to September 2026, 386 of them in Western Australia. A dealer group reporting through one website is counted once per rooftop. A dealer needs sales in every month of the window, and a reporting month at least half its earlier average; dealers that fall short are excluded. Month-on-month comparisons are on these same dealers.
  3. Sample, not census. These are observed sales at monitored dealers, not registrations. Shares are of observed sales.
  4. Segments follow the FCAI segmentation rules, applied to our own catalogue from vehicle dimensions and body type. They are not a feed of VFACTS data and individual models can differ from the published table. Light SUVs are counted in Small SUV, utes take one 4x2 or 4x4 label per model, and sales we cannot place are shown as Unsegmented. 96.2% of sales this month resolved to a segment.
  5. Price movement is like-for-like. Cohorts match on make, model, build year and odometer band and need at least 8 sales in each month. A cohort’s cars are a month older each month, which accounts for part of any fall.
  6. Discounting compares the first price we saw advertised with the price the listing carried when it was withdrawn. Sales with no recorded first price are excluded. For cars we first saw part-way through their time on sale, earlier cuts are missed.
  7. Demo and near-new means 2025 build or later under 5,000 km, or with no odometer reading, advertised alongside used stock.
  8. Days to sell runs from when we first saw the car advertised to when it was withdrawn, per vehicle, so it is understated for cars we first saw late. Figures are medians.
  9. Prices are advertised prices at the point the listing was withdrawn, not settled transaction prices, and are not adjusted for on-road costs.
